What happens when listening is treated as a public resource?

iASpace is where sound, bodies, and presence come together; an experiment in collective attention.
It is an invitation to what is possible when listening is treated as a public resource,
and when a space isdedicated to holding opacity rather than resolution.
For seven days, the CoLab is transformed into a public space to stay, listen, return, and experience sound together.
The room will be continuously filled with sound works by independent artists + independent sound practitioners, and students + faculty from participating departments at Princeton University who've shared their work through an open submission process. Bringing together a diverse range of works-in-progress of drone, frequency, duration, oral history, as well compositions, and experiments. These works will move together throughout the space, informing and responding to one another. Sound practitioners, artists and writers will also bring specific listening and gathering experiences and/or live performance into the room ~ alongside, an intergenerational, artist-led workshop occurs on the weekend. As a vessel, iASpace holds works from the public and across PU’s departments collectively ~ allowing for different practices, questions, and ways of listening to exist together.
*Interaural Space draws from the work of composer Maryanne Amacher (1938–2009). These words describe the internal, 3-dimensional space created by the listener's own ears; the perceptual space that emerges through sound.

Independent artist run spaces matter, especially now.
iASpace creates conditions for artists to thrive, fostering experimentation, connection and community.
This is particularly important for sound artists and sound practitioners where Sound is often ephemeral: filling a room, moving through you,
creating and awakening memory, and then disappearing, unlike more material works as paintings and sculptures.
